Description
Glutathione is an endogenous tripeptide formed from L-glutamate, L-cysteine and glycine, linked through an unusual gamma-peptide bond between the glutamate side chain and cysteine. The free thiol group on its cysteine residue is the reactive centre that allows it to cycle between reduced (GSH) and oxidised (GSSG) forms, and it is among the most abundant intracellular thiols in living cells.
Research Context
Published preclinical literature has investigated glutathione's role in intracellular redox balance, its function as a substrate for glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase enzymes, and the GSH/GSSG ratio as a marker of oxidative stress in cell culture models.
